YouTube Download Tool/Website

There are some great videos on YouTube or even Google Video that can be used in the classroom. A web-based solution that allows you to download a YouTube video to use in your classroom is available from Vixey.net. Simply copy and paste the URL from the video and select the format you want. The web site will do the rest. A software solution for a Macintosh is TubeSock.

Web 2.0 YouTube Style.

There are 2 great videos to describe what Web 2.0 is as well as others once you are at YouTube that talk about World 1.0. Is there a World 2.0 coming? Who would be the creators of something like that? Is World 1.0 surviving or is it just an economic model? Will World 2.0 be a shift in power where strong and economically powerful countries will no longer be that way as other countries will have re-invented themselves? Questions to think about in this rapid age of change and flattening.

15 Frames of Fame!

While at MacWorld in January I was interviewed by Chris Walsh of The Infinite Thinking Machine Podcast/Blog. Most of my interview did not make it into the podcasts, but I have at least 15 frames worth of video! I was asked about my wish for the new year, cool tech tools and what my students would do with an iPhone. Check them out at ITM Look for espisodes entitled Make a Wish, and ITM MacWorld Extra!

UNITE Support Flows

I deposited $561.00 into the DA UNITE Club account after Grant S. had his very successful Basketball Free Throw Contest. Each year the Preschool has a Penny Campaign and this year again they have raised funds for UNITE which total $740.00. I will go there tomorrow to accept the “check”.

Through the sale of bracelets, coffee, lunches and recycling here at DA and at Triangle Day School we have raised a total of $2114.25 so far this year. I hope we can add shelving to the library we built at Nyabubale although we are also working on a project to bring computers and Internet to the Kibale Region with a company called Inveneo that has done other projects in Uganda.

Thanks for all you do to help our sister schools in Uganda as we are changing their lives.

Global Connections

We live in a time when it is easier then ever to bring students from vastly different places and cultures together with technology. A listserv I am on has been discussing good resources to accomplish this connecting.

Here are the resources to date:

http://www.epals.com/ ePALS Classroom Exchange® maintains the Internet’s largest community of collaborative classrooms engaged in cross-cultural exchanges, project sharing and language learning.

http://www.iearn.org/ Started in 1988, iEARNis the world’s largest non-profit global network that enables teachers and young people to use the Internet and other new technologies to collaborate on projects that both enhance learning and make a difference in the world.

http://www.gsn.org/index.html Global SchoolNet Foundation (GSN), founded in 1984 by teachers who believed that in a connected world students need a global perspective, brings together youth online from 194 countries to explore community, cultural and scientific issues that prepare them for the workforce and help them to become responsible and literate global citizens. Global SchoolNet’s free membership program provides project-based learning support materials, resources, activities, lessons and special offers from Global SchoolNet partners.

http://www.iecc.org/ IECC is a free service to help teachers link with partners in other cultures and countries for email classroom pen-pal and other project exchanges. Since its creation in 1992, IECC has distributed over 28,000 requests for e-mail partnerships.

http://www.creativeconnections.org/classroom_connection/ Classroom Connections, the flagship program of Creative Connections, features the formation of “sister class” partnerships between 8-to-18-year-old students from the United States and countries around the world. Students in the paired classes share with one another their way of life first through the creation of letter and video scrapbooks. And new this year, all participating teachers and students will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and insights with one another on our specially designed ExchangeOnline Website.

Social Bookmarking

Del.icio.us is a site that will allow you tag or apply a keyword that organizes your bookmarks. For instance, if you tag bookmarks with Education, all will be organized under this tag or meta data. Further, you can share your tags/bookmarks with others which is where the social comes in. My delicious bookmarks are at: http://del.icio.us/kschaefer. You can see what I have tagged. You can set up and account and use this system to share bookmarks for your students instead of giving them a handout or a long URL to type in. Set up tags based on folders or topics that you teach.
