Quizlet and Students

Simple free learning tools for students and teachers Quizlet

Quizlet was started by Andrew Sutherland in 2005. It has been used by students and teachers since then with much success. Each year new features have been added which for older students may be useful. This video will show you how to setup accounts for your son or daughter who is under 13 which will restrict certain parts of Quizlet. While teachers in the past have created classroom accounts and then shared the log in information with their students, the ability for parents to setup accounts would elimate this need. Teachers could still use the classroom account method for younger students. The ability of students to track their learning over the years makes the use of a personal Quizlet account an important step.

Student Back Channel

Ryan has done more solid work with the backchannel resources. This just appeared in the Class of 16 Students FirstClass Conference. What makes a student to want to share like this? Is it built into the DNA of our students to share? How do we foster more of this sharing so that all students are involved in creation, curation, and publication? How do we make sure teachers are harvesting this back channel?

One way to do all of this is to bring it to light and promote it I believe. Many teachers have created Moodle Discussion Forums for this harvesting as it helps everyone. Of course, there are some who are concerned with quality and fear the backchannel resources could be erroneous. Which is better, nothing or somethings that may need to have the group correct?

Hey guys,

In case you haven’t noticed, I have posted lots and lots of personal glossary words for Kanoy science! If you don’t think you have a complete Personal Glossary #3 list so far, then check it out! (You may have to already be logged onto Moodle for the link to work)

Also, apply to my Quizlet group, “Cavaliers”! We have lots of History and Spanish sets along with a few LA ones. However, we don’t have very many French sets. I recommend Ryan St_____s’s group, “French 7 Engebretsen” for French sets.

The Backchannel students use to get ready for exams

Class of 2016 Spanish Prep

The Class of 2016 is buzzing as students get ready for exams next week. This backchannel happens all of the time and many teachers are now able to collect and use it by including a Moodle Discussion Forum for these posts as well. Knowledge to the people!

12/13/10 3:59  PM – I asked Ryan for the links so everyone could see it

And here’s the link to the group.

12/14/10 10:26  AM – I asked Ryan why he changed the name.

The old name was Platypus. I made the group in like 1 minute during History class last year. I never knew that it would get this big! I wanted it to be more recognizable to DA people.

I believe this is a good indicator how students are learning to collaborate and share with tools not sponsored by the school. I plan to blog about this sharing and how we must be doing more of it as it is a skill that should be taught much like any other skill schools teach.
